Borrow in euros or francs: test exchange-rate risk

A lower nominal rate does not tell the whole story. Look at your income currency and the capital you still owe too.

Your calculation

The stress is applied to the exchange rate immediately, without predicting future movements. A CHF loan can expose you to risk on the converted debt when selling or returning to EUR income. Bank fees and guarantees are not included.

Understanding this result

Repayments and debt: both sides of exchange-rate risk.

Two fixed-rate repayment loans are calculated over the same term and for the same initial euro financing. The CHF loan is converted at the starting exchange rate. The stress changes the EUR value of one CHF and shows the effect on repayments and the outstanding balance halfway through the term.

Why look at the outstanding balance as well as monthly repayments?

When selling or changing your income currency, the converted value of the debt may matter more than that month's repayment. The scenario highlights this risk without choosing a currency for you.
