Illness or an accident can interrupt your work while household expenses continue. Choose protection insurance according to your occupation, income, expenses and existing cover.
Start with your statutory scheme
Self-employed workers are not without statutory support during sick leave. Depending on their activity, affiliation and contributory income, they may qualify for daily benefits and other payments subject to conditions. Check with your institution the amounts, waiting periods and duration available to you; a gap may remain between these benefits and your needs.
Understand the benefits offered
- Incapacity for work: daily payments may supplement statutory benefits if the absence meets the policy definition and after the stated waiting period.
- Disability: an annuity or lump sum may be provided according to the contractual scale, threshold and definition. Recognition by the French social security system does not necessarily trigger insurance benefits.
- Death: a lump sum or annuity may be paid to the designated beneficiaries under the policy conditions.
Business expenses and long-term care are separate benefits, sometimes offered as options or under another policy. They are not included in every offer.
Compare more than the premium
Review waiting periods for illness, accident and hospitalisation, exclusions, medical underwriting, limits, payment duration and the age when cover ends. Check how the insurer calculates benefits and coordinates them with your statutory scheme. The chosen level should match your income and expenses; no policy automatically promises to maintain your entire standard of living.
Madelin: tax deduction subject to conditions
For eligible self-employed workers, certain protection insurance contributions may be deducted from professional profits within the applicable tax limits and conditions. This benefit is not automatic for every self-employed person. Under the French micro-BIC or micro-BNC regime, actual expenses are not deducted separately from profits: they are covered by the flat-rate allowance. Confirm your situation with your accountant or tax office.
